After yesterday’s posting about perchlorates in drinking water, we fully expected to receive the following question… and we thank you for not disappointing us!

A concerned parent from any area just outside of what sounds like a military firing range wrote in this morning and asked whether or not installing a reverse osmosis water filtration systems will allow her to effectively remove all perchlorates from her water.

We wish MORE concerned parents would take more of an interest in the quality of water they allow their children to drink!

We live live near a military base where they always blow stuff up and so the perchlorates could get in my water if what i read is true. If so, then reverse osmosis water filters will take them all out, right? we just had a new baby girl and we don’t want to take any chances! thanks!

We will begin by saying that the USEPA has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for perchlorates at 6 micrograms per liter (0.006 mg/L or ppm) and that quality reverse osmosis water systems will reduce perchlorate concentrations in drinking water to levels below 0.006 ppm.

In other words, even the best reverse osmosis systems will not completely remove perchlorates from drinking water… but that does NOT mean you should ignore their presence!

Those who live in areas that have been contaminated should definitely install a water filter capable of removing perchlorate, probably some type of reverse osmosis filter. these filters won’t remove all of the perchlorate, but it is best to reduce the amount of perchlorate to the extent possible. … Needless to say, those with children attending schools that use water contaminated with perchlorate should take action to demand that the schools install proper filters, too, as drinking perchlorate-contaminated water could cause developmental delays in children, according to Dr. Power. We have an inground pool that has a vinyl liner. the liner pulled away from the side and allowed water to leak down under the liner causing the bottom of the pool to feel mushy. the substance that we laid down was some kind of pool cement when we built the pool years ago. can we just pull the liner out and shovel out that old cement and pour new in and also around the steel walls so we don't have to mess with another liner problem?

The 112-unit Wedgewood Apartments in Bloomfield have sold for $7.05 million.

Monumental Properties L.P. sold the 10.8-acre complex at 4 Wedgewood Drive to Four Sisters LLC, according to Chozick Realty, the broker involved in the deal.

Monumental Properties had owned the apartments for about four decades. The complex, featuring one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, was built in 1966. it has a clubhouse and swimming pool.

In the coming year, Chozick says the new owner plans cosmetic improvements and updates to the property.

Weak ‘Gold Coast’

While Hartford’s commercial property market languishes, the Fairfield County market on the state’s “Gold Coast’’ isn’t faring much better, one commercial survey shows.

Property broker Jones Lang LaSalle, which also serves the Hartford market, says in its latest report that recovery in Fairfield County “remains muted.’’ Ditto in that other enclave of wealth, neighboring Westchester County, N.Y.

Both markets saw average asking rental rates decrease in most office submarkets, Jones Lang LaSalle reports.

“one of the biggest challenges the Fairfield County office market faced in the third quarter was the persistent threat of the recession worsening,” said Robert Ageloff, international director and head of Jones Lang LaSalle’s Stamford office. “That danger, coupled with continued job losses in office-using sectors, suppressed demand for office space, stifling any significant momentum Fairfield County saw during the second quarter of the year.”

Fairfield’s third-quarter Class A office vacancy stood unchanged at 22.7 percent. Class B vacancies grew to 25 percent, up 2 percentage points from mid-year. not surprisingly, Class A rents eased 1.8 percent to $35.69 a square foot.

Curiously, Class B rents rose 4.3 percent to $21.84 a square foot.

Manchester Apts. Sold

The 10-unit Stone Creek Apartments in Manchester have sold to a new owner for $720,000

Chozick Realty was the broker on the deal.

Built in 1968, the 0.7-acre complex has six one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom apartments.

$1.3M Branford Flex Sale

A 25,000-square-foot medical/flex building in Branford has sold for $1.3 million, authorities say.

The property is at 14 Business Park Drive, adjacent to Interstate 95.

Todds Hill Investment Circle sold the building to Commercial Building Associates of Branford, which plans to renovate the 10,000 square feet of vacant flex space to accommodate new tenants.

People’s United Bank financed the purchase, realty authorities said.

The Geenty Group Realtors of Branford was the broker for the buyer and seller in the transaction.

UniTek’s Branford Space

UniTek Global Services inc. leased 3,570 square feet of Branford office-warehouse space.

UniTek, a subcontractor for cable operator Comcast, will occupy Unit 6 at 801 N. Main St.

The company signed a three-year lease with landlord The Verna Family Insurance Trust.

The Geenty Group Realtors represented the landlord in lease negotiations. O,R&L Commercial represented the tenant.

Milford Liquor Lease

Wholesale liquor distributor Business Microcosm Corp. leased 6,600 square feet in Milford for a distributorship.

Business Microcosm, doing business as BMC Imports, signed for space at 25 Eastern Steel Road.

BMC President Artemy Saguirian says his firm distributes wine, beer and liquor, including a national license to The Jewel of Russia brand vodka.

The Geenty Group Realtors represented tenant and landlord Connors Properties LLC in the lease.

Bloomfield’s Wedgewood Apts. Draw $7.05 Million

I have a fairly large pool, and the pool chlorine I purchased to open my pool with is not enough to give it a good shock. I live quite far from the pool supply store. Can I use some chlorine bleach to get it to where it should be?

this might be effective, but i would not recommend it. like asking, can i use a tarp i bought at walmart as a parachute?

I have a pool pump that is 1 hp and 12 Amps. the pump manual says to use 12 gauge extension wire to plug it into. I recently bought a timer for it, but the timer has a 1' 14 gauge wire. but, the timer says it can handle up to 15 Amps. Is it okay to use this timer with the pump?

depends on voltage and length of run (from breaker box to timer to pump)..if it is 115 volts, 12 amps,you can use 14 gauge wire over 100 feet….TOTAL from breaker to pump providing there is nothing else on that wire's circuit
