Pill take back

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has set up a program that allows the public to drop off unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs during regular business hours Monday through Friday at the Destin substation on Stahlman Avenue.

The JobsPlus Mobile one stop will be at the Destin Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. Services include unemployment compensation, job search assistance and Employ Florida Marketplace registration.

Chocoholic Frenzy

To get smart dogs, you need a brainy trainer

As Sherry Clark sits in her yard under the shade of a large tree surrounded by her dogs, she exudes the very calmness, gentleness and quietness that has made her dog training business a success.

Clark, the owner of Brainy Dogs, says, “I love dogs and want them to be able to stay with their families, that is my mission in life, to save all dogs from animal shelters.”

Having lived in Corning for two years, Clark runs her business from her home on Rawson Road where everything, from the playground equipment and kiddie pool, to the rooms in her mobile home, are dedicated to dogs.

“Everything I have and do is to help dogs gain confidence and to teach people how to live with their dogs,” Clark explains.

She uses the positive reinforcement method in her training and believes there are no bad dogs, or bad dog owners for that matter.

“Dogs are intelligent, they are not things, they are creatures you can connect with. As soon as people learn that, and understand behavior modification in a positive way, they can happily and successfully live with their animals,” Clark explains.

Clark doesn’t refer to herself as a dog whisperer, although she has learned much of the training method she utilizes from the man she refers to as the original dog whisperer, Ian Dunbar.

“I truly believe in his positive reinforcement method, you don’t have to use power and negative corrective methods to train a dog,” she states.

Positive reinforcement means a dog owner rewards the positive things a dog does instead of punishing the bad things.

“Dogs, like humans, will repeat things that are rewarding and stop doing things that don’t pay off,” Clark explains.

She has been training dogs for 11 years now, but her love of animals started when she as a young child she owned a dachshund.

“I taught her to sit using an ice cream cone as a reward, but I don’t really recommend ice cream for dogs by the way,” Clark laughs.

She was involved in “corporate America” in Kansas City when she decided to leave that lifestyle and go back to her love of training dogs.

Clark’s own formal training started at a dog training school where she learned from a woman who worked for the military training bomb dogs and as a service dog trainer for people with disabilities. “I also worked with another service dog trainer, a search and rescue trainer, and for a couple of years attended positive reinforcement seminars all over the country,” she said.

As Clark brings out Gus, a mixed breed dog she is training for a client, she talks about teaching dogs to have a job.

“Some dogs bark too much because they don’t have anything else to do. Dogs need to have job, even if it is just finding a cup or toy,” she says.

Clark explains the most common dog related problems people bring to her is jumping, not paying attention and pulling on the leash.

“All of those are repairable problems and ones really not too hard to overcome. I love teaching dogs to have a job around the house, bring in the groceries, take out the trash, recycle, grab a beverage from the cooler, stuff like that is a blast,” Clark states.

But most importantly, Clark believes the greatest thing for dogs is to have enough manners to earn the privilege of spending more time with their humans.

She is also of the mindset that when working with aggression in dogs, it is really a matter of working with fear.

“We can all get over fear if we give ourselves the opportunity. I ask people to give their dogs the opportunity to learn,” Clark said.

Along with dog training, Clark offers dog boarding at her property, and a doggie camp where dogs receive 30-days of personal training as well as owner training.

“I also have ‘Almost Camp,’ where the dog and owner come to my place three times a week and we work on in-depth training and socialization which includes trips to parks, stores, and other busy places,” Clark said.

As Clark talked about her dogs, profession and experiences, Gus, sitting at her feet, happily wagged his tail, patiently waiting for a treat.

Platinum Facts This precious metal is one of six metallic elements collectively known as platinum group metals (PGM). The other five members of PGM include ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium.

Soil and sediment deposits – otherwise known as alluvial deposits – have proven to be a significant source of platinum, but it can also be found as a byproduct of nickel mining. Approximately eight tons of ore must be mined to produce one pure ounce of platinum. The refining process can be an intensive mix of mining, crushing, milling, mixing, melting, and smelting – this process can take up to eight weeks.

The largest production of platinum occurs in South Africa, followed by Russia. Platinum can also be recovered from scrap and recycled.

Price highlights for this market include:

In the late 1970s, prices for platinum began to rise, build up by concerns that South Africa, the world’s leading producer, might cut supplies if the international community placed sanctions on them. these sanctions were threatened in response to segregation policies. Prices would eventually top $1,000 per ounce in early 1980.
In 2000, questions surrounding Russia’s export quotas and a strike in one of the biggest platinum mines in South Africa brought significant price volatility. Prices went from around $400 to more than $600 an ounce, only to turn back towards $400 by the end of the following year.
Through 2003 and 2004, platinum prices moved towards – and eventually through – the $800 level on renewed issues regarding the platinum supply from South Africa. This time, the concerns were sparked by miners adjusting production forecasts. The situation was exacerbated by worker strikes at two large mining companies.
New auto catalyst laws, jewelry demand, and mining issues continued to fuel volatility in platinum prices through the mid 2000s. Prices would eventually rise above $2,300 per ounce in 2008, only to collapse in the fall of that year as economic issues weighed on the automotive sector, trimming demand prospects. Prices would dip below $800 before the start of 2009.
Prices began another climb higher through 2009 as hopes for economic recovery aiding the automotive industry, and a weaker US dollar provided support.

Owing to its rarity in a pure form, platinum was not as widely appreciated in the past as perhaps gold was. It is said that early Spaniards panning for gold were bothered by the nuisance white nuggets that would appear – an “unripe” form of gold. as research and methods to refine platinum were developed in the eighteenth century, platinum grew to be a symbol of prestige and wealth due to its rarity.

Platinum now enjoys a high level of importance for industrial applications as well as adornments. The second half of the twentieth century saw a rise in the demand for platinum as jewelry, prized for its resistance to wear and tarnish. The appeal of platinum jewelry grew first in Japan – where it was prized for its prestige, value, and purity – and only recently penetrated Western markets.

In the late 1970s, PGM consumption became highest in applications in the automotive industry and they continue to be used extensively as an oxidation catalyst in catalytic converters and as catalysts in refining fuels.

Key Concerns

Availability: By far, the most significant area of focus for platinum is its low occurrence in the Earth’s crust. The rarity of platinum compared to other metals has spawned a number of creative attempts to illustrate just how scarce the metal may be, e.g. imagining that all the platinum mined would fit in an average swimming pool or living room.

Regional Concentration: in addition to its apparently limited supply, a huge percentage of current mining is also confined primarily to South Africa and Russia leaving the door open for the possibility that any political concerns or regional unrest could disrupt supplies. an excellent example of this possibility was illustrated by the concern over limited electricity supply to mining companies in South Africa and the likelihood that refining and production would be interrupted – an event which contributed significant volatility to the market.

Applications: New applications, as well as an increase in the existing technologies which employ platinum, could shift the supply and demand dynamics rather quickly. The continued efforts to control emissions are significant in that platinum plays an important role in catalytic converters – however, new technologies have enabled the automotive catalyst creators to substitute other PGM metals, something which may impact the overall percentage use of platinum.

Economic Conditions: Since the largest demand for platinum currently comes from the automotive sector, economic issues which may impact automobile sales may also impact platinum prices. Recent advances have also seen platinum applied in medical treatments, including its use as a component in pacemakers and even as anti-cancer therapy.

Which chemicals can i use in the pool which will be safe for my baby?

I'm teaching my baby to swim and she became too big for our bath tub. we have a Jacuzzi outside (Portable Inflatable Spa) and I want to use it as our place for swimming lessons. what kind of chemicals can I put in it so it'll fight the bacteria. Are there any safe methods/chemicals which will b safe for the Spa and the most important for my baby. (She likes to drink the water , well sh swallows a bit of it.)

Baking soda to neutralize/lower PH or Borax to raise the PH. Chlorine is fine to use as long as you give it 24 hours after shocking the pool or 4 hours after a regular dosing.

If you can afford it though, switch the whole system over to a salt water system – completely natural and safe and once the system is established you don't put any chemicals in it at all.

Grew up with a pool in the backyard and always hated the weekly pool shock because we couldn't use the pool for the whole day, no matter how hot it was or how much we bugged!

Just bought my family a nice new pool, one that will come complete with beautiful wood deck and everything, but want to give them something frighting to wake up to the morning before I reveal the purchase… I want to know what I can do to make it look like either the chemicals or something else destroyed the old plastic liner pool inflatable tube pool, other than being caused by me. I'm picturing big holes melted into the plastic and water gushing out, just so they can freak out a little before I reveal to them a pleasant surprise for the summer… Any good ideas on what chemical I could add? or any other ideas I'm interested…

turn off the safety heat valve and overheat it that will melt the tubing and probly some of the plastic. That would atake a while though and chemicalls wont work because the water would dilute it.

Why does the suction hose for my pool filter collapse?

I have a 24' about ground pool. It has a haywood 1hp pump. the problem I have is that when I use the pump and filter to vacuum the bottom of the pool, after a few minutes the suction hose collapses at the inlet to the pump. I have a new skimmer basket assembly because the previous owners didn't winterize the pool properly and it froze causing it to crack and suck air when I vac the pool. I also bought a new vac hose last year before I found the cracks in the skimmer housing. I use one of those clear triangle shaped vac heads with the brushes on it. I know I don't have any restrictions in the hose or the skimmer housing. I have backwashed the filter before I start vacuuming the pool. Could the vac head be causing the restriction? should I try a different vac head? the suction and return hoses are new as of last year. they were removed in the winter. Could it be just a bad hose?

Sounds more like something is clogging the head, and that would be the liner. would try a different head

You may try to close your suction valve a little to see if that keeps your hose from collapsing.

try not to suck so much !!!hehehehehehheehehe
